I'm working with some students at the moment to put together our first ever "CH WK" (Combined Honours Week)...
Members of our Student-Staff Committee wanted to promote the advantages of doing Combined to their peers, in an attempt to help them articulate the value of their degree, as well as improve that value through things students get involved in because of the week.
It's been brilliant working with them - they have an amazing grasp of what they've gained through their degree, and they've put together some brilliant events to pass on the message as well. CH WK flyer =)
I guess every University at the moment is spending time trying to really pin down what is so great about their patch, and so on...
I'm rather hoping they're getting students on board in a big way with this, because they're the people that are truely able to tell future students what they've gained through their education.
All this kind of ties in with my main research project, which aims to pin down exactly that. Not just the skills of a graduate, not even just their attributes, but their life philosophies, their ethics and values. Quite a big task it feels! I'm somewhat daunted. (If anyone has any hints/ tips/ resources - let me know!)
Can't wait to see how this week goes. I really hope their peers respond well and come out in force to celebrate the strengths of their degree, and to strengthen themselves ready for rockier waters....
Comment by Grace Barker on March 28, 2011 at 10:19 Well, that was a pretty successful week! The first two days went exceptionally well, and the students turned out to support their peers and get involved. Not vast numbers, it wasn't a major revolution in student engagement, but it could certainly be deemed a success.
Drop-in sessions didn't work as well though. I think the students who organised these days were pretty disappointed at the turn out, especially on Thursday. But we all recognise it's a learning curve for us all as to what works and what doesnt.
I really hope they've got a lot out of the week in terms of their own development and understanding of what it takes to pull off these kinds of weeks. There's definitely a new appreciation of just how much effort staff put into putting on these activities for their students!
First 'Graduateness' meeting with students tomorrow....
